If the door opens outwards the flat side should look outwards too if it opens to the inside the flat side should look inwards. Now slip in the cylinder through the door knob hole while holding the opening and closing mechanism pushed in so that it fits into the space provided for it in the door knob cylinder. Find the two large screws and the metal cover that go on the inside and screw it in place. Make sure it is tight but not overly tight. Test this by tuning the outside knob the opening and closing mechanism should retract without resistance.
But the real money seems to be in the door knobs that were really from that time. Just as much as the other collectibles and antiques in old estates can get a pretty penny at auction the antique door knobs in those homes are also commanding top dollar at estate sales and auctions. Heres a little interesting antique door knob history: During World War II many people pulled the brass doorknobs from their homes to help the government in their collections of brass to make war goods. Having one of these brass goodies today can fetch a pretty penny at an auction.
Now you have everything all set to slide the door knob assembly into position place the part in first which receives the screws the spindle will have to go all the way through the latching assembly and simply fit the opening properly. When you are grasping it just gently spin the knob forwards and backwards this allows you realize that you already have it in properly. Now place the additional knob set up directly into place and screw it into place again; simply sung the screws and ensure the door knob moves freely.
Soon a lock would be added to a door. That made not only a way to keep the door from accidentally opening but also a way to intentionally keep people out. That wasnt enough for some people who could bust through a simple lock so there had to be more substantial locks created. Dead bolts were added to really hold a door shut when the person inside wanted it to stay that way. At one point there were very limited selections if you wanted a door with locks and even more limited selections if you wanted the additional dead bolt lock that matched the door knob.
